Trump decides on U.S. Supreme Court pick, announcement to come

President Donald Trump is narrowing down his list of Supreme Court Justice candidates.

The rollout will be modeled on the seamless presentation in January 2017 of the President's first Supreme Court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, in what was undeniably one of his most successful and most well-managed moments as President.

Two candidates on President Donald Trump's list of potential Supreme Court nominees - federal appeals court Judges Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett - were singled out for praise Sunday by a top legal adviser to the president, indicating they remain prominent in the search. The White House has been preparing confirmation materials on all four.

Hatch said he is prepared for his 15th Supreme Court confirmation fight since becoming a senator.

A group of Democratic senators from Republican-leaning states - lawmakers who could be pivotal in the confirmation fight - declined Trump's invitation to attend the White House announcement.

The minority party - unable to block the nominee unless they lure some Republican senators to their side - have stressed the high stakes of the president's decision as they prepare for the confirmation battle ahead. He now works for the Washington-based lobbying firm Covington & Burling.

"Mr. President, I am grateful to you and I'm humbled by your confidence in me", Kavanaugh said Monday night.

Yvonne Abraham addresses Senator Susan Collins, Republican of ME, in an op-ed for Boston Globe, calling this "only the moment that might define your entire career" and urging her "to protect us from whoever does get the nod" from overturning Roe v. Wade, if confirmed.

"When this power is placed in the wrong hands, our justice system can also take our country backwards, whether it's upholding the Muslim ban, attacking the basic civil rights around the right to vote or weakening our protections for immigrants", she said. Perhaps it will fire up Democrats to embark on the decades-long quest to remake the ideological balance of the court that the GOP has used to enthuse its grassroots voters and that Trump harnessed in 2016.

The 28-year-old came from two sets down to beat Ivo Karlovic 6-7, 3-6, 7-6, 7-6, 13-11 in a match that lasted almost four hours. Karolina Pliskova advanced to the third round for the first time with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Victoria Azarenka .

The president has spent the days leading up to the decision mulling the pros and cons of the various options with aides and allies.

Trump published a similar list during the 2016 campaign, and it was widely credited with helping him win the votes of social conservatives who otherwise might have been skeptical of a thrice-married billionaire from NY. But the situation appeared to remain fluid. Hardiman, who lives in Pennsylvania, is a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit, where he served at one time with Trump's sister, Judge Maryanne Trump Barry. He helped finance his law degree at the Georgetown University Law Center by driving a taxi.

But his supporters note his experience and a wide range of legal opinions.

If confirmed, Kavanaugh would replace a frequent swing vote on the bench, retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, who often sided with his liberal colleagues on issues such as abortion, affirmative action and LGBT rights.

Barrett - a longtime Notre Dame Law School professor who became a federal appeals judge last fall - excited social conservatives with her testimony when questioned about her Roman Catholic faith in her nomination hearings a year ago.

Barrett, who is 46, has less of a judicial record to review, having just been nominated to the appeals court by Trump previous year. A self-described introvert, Kethledge co-authored a book, "Lead Yourself First", in which he talks about how some of the world's great leaders learned from solitude and quiet. "This is a really big decision for him". On Sunday he was back to citing 'the four people'.

Kavanaugh's time in Bush administrations, for example, could count against him with a President who is suspicious of the political establishment.

Four federal appeals court judges are President Trump's top contenders for nomination to the Supreme Court.
