Worry and relief at EPA after scandal-plagued chief's exit

Worry and relief at EPA after scandal-plagued chief's exit

Former Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt is reportedly devastated after he was forced to resign.

President Trump tweeted Thursday that he has accepted Pruitt's resignation and praised the former administrator for his "outstanding" work at the agency.

Trump also announced that Deputy Administrator Andrew Wheeler would take the agency's helm as acting administrator starting Monday.

Scott Dworkin, co-founder of the Democratic Coalition: "Someone needs to make sure Scott Pruitt doesn't smuggle his $43,000 soundproof phone booth out of the EPA offices". The Intercept online news service reported that Wheeler held the fundraisers even after press accounts revealed that he was under consideration to be Pruitt's second in command.

In the letter, sent to Donald Trump, Pruitt says Democrats have been pushing to have him removed for months. Chmielewski also leveled new claims against the administrator, including "improper retaliation against EPA staff".

Beyer and Lieu, in their letter to the inspector general, said the allegations were supported by an analysis of Pruitt's public calendars. Under Pruitt, the EPA issued mass waivers for small refineries from their annual requirements to use biofuels. Prior to that, he had served as Oklahoma attorney general in 2010.

I tried to manage, I could see my tyres opening up. " I would not know where the difference is ", Vettel said. The team are reportedly eyeing Sauber youngster Charles Leclerc as a successor for 2019.

"The damage Scott Pruitt has done to the Agency will not easily be undone", he wrote.

"Scott Pruitt's departure is long overdue". Among the scandals engulfing his tenure is an accusation that he used his political position to secure his wife a six-figure salary job. Last year, a federal appeals court ruled that Pruitt overstepped his authority in trying to stall an Obama-era rule requiring companies to monitor and reduce methane leaks. This differs from Pruitt, who drew attention not only for his aggressive moves to cut back regulations but also for mounting scandals and questions about potential ethics violations.

And Wheeler has presented himself as a consensus builder: "I will turn to the career staff and ask their advice and listen to them", he told the EPW committee during a confirmation hearing last fall for EPA deputy. "He has hired a lot of smart people to work for him who were good and have gone on to do various other things", the lobbyist said.

An internal EPA email shows that the same month Wheeler was lobbying the Interior Department to shrink Bears Ears, his lobbying colleagues at Faegre-Baker-Daniels were over at the EPA discussing abandoned uranium mines and their cleanup contracts. When Wheeler was a lobbyist behind the scenes, it was easy for him to help industry erode the EPA's science-based mission of protecting public health and the environment.

"We now face the stark reality of a coal lobbyist, Andrew Wheeler, running the agency that is supposed to protect our air, water and climate", he said, in a statement. But as the country and the world let out a sigh of relief over his departure, the breath we draw afterward will be all the more polluted by his legacy. Wheeler also represented Underwriters Laboratories, which does testing and certification for the EPA among other organizations; Xcel Energy; and Insurance Auto Auctions, a salvaged vehicle company, according to his financial disclosure form.

As the CV may suggest, Wheeler is no stranger to the intricacies of environmental policy or the kinds of tasks that await him at the top of the EPA.
