UK Police Probe New Chemical Case, Same Used On Ex-Russian Spy

The same nerve agent that recently poisoned a former Russian spy and his daughter in the United Kingdom has left another two people in critical condition, according to British counterterrorism police. "We can not attribute this to the same batch at this point".

Wallace called on Russian Federation to share information about the poisoning. It also comes as Russia hosts the World Cup - a monthlong global extravaganza in which both the English and Russian soccer teams have advanced so far.

"Two drug addicts were poisoned with serious drugs and the British intelligence services and the British leadership are now trying to interpret this incident as a continuation of the Skripal poisoning", said Peskov.

British investigators believe the Amesbury pair have been infected by the same nerve agent, a Soviet-developed compound from a group of nerve agents called Novichok.

Police insisted nobody else was affected by the nerve agent.

"I have received test results from Porton Down (military research centre) which show that the two people have been exposed to the nerve agent Novichok", Neil Basu, Britain's most senior counter-terrorism officer, told reporters.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the case as "very worrying" but said Russian Federation had no information "about what substances were used and how they were used".

"It is not believed that there is a significant health risk to the public".

According to British authorities, 45-year-old Charlie Rowley and 44-year-old Dawn Sturgess are in critical condition, having been poisoned by "the same nerve agent" from the first incident.

Separately, Sergei Zheleznyak, deputy speaker of the State Duma, Russia's lower house of parliament, told state TV that the new poisoning incident in Britain looked like an attempt to spoil England soccer fans' positive perception of Russia.

The Skripal poisoning resulted in a mass expulsion of Russian diplomats from the United Kingdom, USA and allied countries, despite the Kremlin's insistence that it did not try to poison the ex-spy. "They are the ones who could fill in all the clues to keep people safe".

Alastair Hay, Professor Emeritus of Environmental Toxicology at the University of Leeds, said there is "no specific method for the detection of Novichok in the environment" because the use of the nerve agent was not considered likely when monitors were designed.

'The focus of the investigation remains identifying the source of the contamination as quickly as possible'.

The hit squad sent to murder Sergei Skripal probably sprayed Novichok on his front door before trailing him and his daughter through Salisbury until they saw them collapse on a park bench on March 4.

Video still of Novichok victim Dawn Sturgess taken the day before she fell ill. Doctors say they don't know the long-term prognosis for their health.
