From there you will be able to see all the apps that now have access to your Google account, and you can remove some of them if you no longer use them or if you're not comfortable with it.

In reality, of course, people often rush through security prompts because they want to use the app or service immediately.

"You can also view and control permissions within myaccount.google.com under Apps".

It pointed the BBC to its developer policies, which state: "There should be no surprises for Google users: hidden features, services, or actions that are inconsistent with the marketed goal of your application may lead Google to suspend your ability to access Google API Services".

What does "read" really mean?

"Signing in with Google" apps use your Google Account to sign into other website or apps. Their privacy policies mention monitoring emails but they don't mention the human part.

The practice of automatic processing has caused some to speculate mistakenly that Google "reads" your emails.

"When a user connects through third party email applications, the application has access to all content because, technically, your connection to the email application is via the mail server where all emails are stored". This is what granting permissions does. "You're really sure? You're totally sure?"

"When you have someone's code scanning your emails, it can consume a huge amount of information very quickly. They're just the biggest, so they have the most information".

German Interior minister drops resignation threat over migration
Gains by the populist Alternative for Germany have returned the topic to the CSU's agenda ahead of the state election. But in comments to the Sueddeutsche Zeitung newspaper, he complained that he was in an "inconceivable" situation.

"It's the worst of both worlds", he says. "For example, the Security Checkup shows all non-Google apps that have access to your data".

There are apps that do ask for permission to your email, and plenty have a legitimate reason to do so. No, it's not Google, this time around, but this privacy-infringing feature does affect Gmail, which happens to be the world's top email service.

Edison said it has since stopped this practice. While many companies use machines to skim email messages for keywords and phrases, few allow their employees to read through user's messages.

And this is really the crux of the issue. Something else that's unclear is whether Gmail users are fully aware that individual employees may be reading their emails, as opposed to an automated system.

"And who's going to do that, right? We don't know whether they've done things like sell it to political campaigns trying to change our elections", Thompson said.

"I don't think they're doing anything different", he says.

The apps do need consent, but the terms of that consent are not clear, the article says.
