Net Neutrality Can Still Be Saved

FCC Commissioner Jessica Rosenworcel - who voted against the repeal of Net Neutrality - released her own statement today.

As you surf the internet, you might not notice anything different.

The regulations required internet providers to treat all lawful traffic the same, without creating paid premium lanes for some services or slowing others.

Your ability to watch and use your favorite apps and services could start to change - though not right away - following the official demise Monday of Obama-era internet protections.

Rally organizers carry away props following a protest outside the Federal Communication Commission building in Washington, D.C., against the end of net neutrality rules on December 14, 2017.

Consumers aren't likely to see immediate changes following Monday, June 11, 2018 formal repeal of Obama-era internet rules that had ensured equal treatment for all. The lawsuit has been assigned to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit, with oral arguments expected to occur by the end of the year.

Warriors vs. Cavaliers, Game 4 on Friday night
The Golden State Warriors became the NBA's first back-to-back champion since 2013 as they claimed their third title in four years. Not many teams are in position to even think about knocking the Warriors off their perch.

Hey, remember when there was all of that hubbub about the FCC vote that killed net neutrality? Now Comcast Cable president Dave Watson posted a blog post today to reconfirm Comcast's "committed to an open internet".

And how will repealing net neutrality affect me?

But consumer advocates say that the repeal is just pandering to big business and that cable and phone giants will now be free to block access to services they don't like.

And critics fear repealing them may see consumers charged extra for anything more than the most basic service.

Still, supporters have hoped to force a public vote on the issue, because with midterm elections looming some lawmakers might be swayed as net neutrality is a resonant issue with voters. This is how the term "net neutrality" was coined - the idea was that every bit is the same and that ISPs can't charge differentiated prices based on different types of services.

The debate around net neutrality has been going on for years, but it gained massive attention when FCC Chairman Ajit Pai announced in April 2017 that he would reverse the Title II classification of Internet service providers, meaning large broadband companies like Verizon and Comcast could give special treatment to certain online content. Silicon Valley leaders and investors have been fighting for the rules ever since. As we pointed out at the time of the Senate vote, the CRA now has to pass the House where the Democrats that support the Act are greatly outnumbered. In January, attorneys general in 22 states and the District of Columbia filed a protective petition for review of the order. The FTC can't take action unless something can clearly be proven to be "unfair or deceptive", something that's tricky to do in the net neutrality realm where anti-competitive behavior is often disguised as routine network management. Several states, including New Jersey, Washington, Oregon and California, have gone so far as to push legislation to enforce the principles of net neutrality within their borders.
