White House adviser says Canada's Trudeau 'stabbed us in the back'

President Donald Trump's top economic adviser says Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau "really kind of stabbed us in the back" when Trudeau said at the end of the Group of Seven summit that Canada wouldn't be pushed around by the USA and its trade tariffs.

"He really kinda stabbed us in the back", top U.S. economic adviser Larry Kudlow said of Mr Trudeau on CNN's State Of The Union.

Mr Trump had already left the summit when Mr Trudeau announced retaliatory measures Canada would take next month in response to United States tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union.

Those were fighting words for Trump, who accused Trudeau of "false statements" and of being "very dishonest & weak".

Trudeau also said Canada "will not be pushed around" byt its mighty US neighbor.

"The world as we know it, namely the USA -led rules-based multilateralism, is now in serious danger of unraveling, as illustrated at the G7 meeting", said Erik Nielsen, chief economist at Unicredit Bank.

"Very dishonest and weak".

Trudeau had announced that the G7 members - Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the US - had agreed upon a joint communiqué, or formal statement, after a hard week on trade issues.

Trump had set a very confrontational tone ahead of the summit by slapping tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from Canada and the European Union, and calling for Russian Federation to be let back into the summit. "The non-factual part of this is - they have enormous tariffs", Kudlow said on CNN's "State of the Union".

But Kudlow probably didn't help the message he was sending to the Canadian leader by once referring to him as "Pierre Trudeau". He instructed US representatives not to sign the communique from the summit, raising new questions about Mr. Trump's strained relationship with leaders of historic allies.

"He ought to come out and apologize in the name of the western allies", Kudlow said of Trudeau.

"It's a betrayal. It's essentially double-crossing".

He tied the White House's bitter response to concerns the president now appeared weak going into high-stake discussions with Kim Jong Un.

Peter Navarro lit into Canadian Prime Minister, accusing him of acting in 'bad faith'.

"He is not going to permit any show of weakness on the eve of this trip to negotiate with North Korea, nor should he", Kudlow said on CNN.

Kudlow was particularly offended that Trudeau would say this ahead of Trump's North Korean summit.

Germany also said it will stand by the jointly agreed communique.

"Canada is the biggest single purchaser of USA goods and services in the world", he noted, stressing that the US runs a trade surplus with Canada. "We don't think that that is a useful or productive way to do business".

Shortly after Mr. Trudeau said that he was "happy to announce that we have released a joint communique by all seven countries" indicating that the U.S. was also included, Mr. Trump announced that Washington would reverse its decision and not sign the statement. I do not know where we go from here.

Kudlow warned Trump would push back. The European Council President responded by saying, "We will not stop trying to convince our American friends and President Trump that undermining makes no sense at all". And what did Trudeau do as soon as the plane took off from Canadian airspace? -Canada border. Trudeau told reporters that imposing retaliatory measures "is not something I relish doing" but that he wouldn't hesitate to do so because "I will always protect Canadian workers and Canadian interests".

White House reportedly considering new economic penalties against Canada
Trump was making a reference to the War of 1812 , but it was inaccurate: it was British troops that attacked the White House . The talks all appear to be moving slowly or stalling, leading to angst on Capitol Hill and among business leaders.
