Trump commutes sentence after appeal by Kim Kardashian

Johnson said she has not heard directly from the White House but she'd like to tell Trump how grateful she is for having her released - for herself and her family. The statement noted Johnson was known as a mentor to other inmates, and cited recommendations for clemency from prison officials.

Kardashian West visited the White House with her lawyer, Shawn Holley, and had also linked up with Mr Trump's son-in-law and presidential adviser, Jared Kushner, who has been lobbying for prison reform.

Johnson's daughter, Catina Scales, who appeared with her on "New Day", also thanked Kardashian West for her help in obtaining her mother's commutation.

As she was never sentenced for any other crime and violence was not featuring in the case, she could ask for her sentence to be commuted during Obama's 2014 push to free non-violent drug offenders from jail.

"I want to tell my war angel, thank you for never giving up, you did it, you fought and you fought until I was free", she said.

Johnson was released from prison hours after news of Trump's pardon came.

Happy that her prison time is over, Johnson noted that she feels she has more than paid her debt to society but she's "not bitter about it".

During his first year and half in office he has issued a number of pardons, however, mostly involving high-profile cases. "And that's to take a look at her situation, look at the individual, and say, "hey, this person is more than just a number or a statistic", said Scholl.

Jack Johnson received a rare posthumous pardon last month, after another actor - Sylvester Stallone of Rocky fame - championed his case.

'I hope to continue this important work by working together with organizations who have been fighting this fight for much longer than I have and deserve the recognition'.

In one of her first interviews, Johnson, 63, told CNN about Trump, "I am going to make you proud that you gave me this second chance in life".

"She's actually achieved nothing", he said on The Project on Thursday night.

According to Mic, the outlet that first publicized Johnson's story, which in turn got the attention of Kardashian West, "Johnson was convicted for her role facilitating communications in a cocaine trafficking operation in Memphis, Tennessee".
