Former Senate Employee James Wolfe Lied To FBI, Arrested

The Senate intelligence committee holds a confirmation hearing for CIA nominee Gina Haspel last month.

Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Richard Burr (R-N.C.) and Vice Chair Mark Warner (D-Va.) expressed disappointment following news of the indictment of a former committee aide who is charged with lying to investigators about media leaks.

In an indictment unsealed late Thursday, prosecutors charged James Wolfe with three counts of making false statements to federal authorities. He worked closely with both Democrats and Republicans on the committee.

Reporter #1 co-authored an article, prosecutors said, that contained classified information about Page that had been provided to the committee by the government.

The Department of Justice was trying to track down who has been leaking information about these investigations. He also maintained a yearslong personal relationship with one reporter, which prosecutors say he lied about until being confronted with a photograph of him and the journalist.

But the government says that Wolfe was in frequent communication with several journalists by phone, through encrypted messaging apps and in meetings at bars and restaurants.

"The Attorney General has stated that investigations and prosecutions of unauthorized disclosure of controlled information are a priority of the Department of Justice", said Assistant Attorney General John Demers in a statement. He initially denied knowing her, then when shown photos of them together, he admitted they had been in a three-year relationship.

Former Senate Intelligence Committee staffer James Wolfe appears in federal court in Baltimore.

"We were made aware of the investigation late previous year, and have fully cooperated with the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice since then", Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., and Vice Chairman Mark Warner, D-Va., said. Burr and Warner added that the Wolfe case will "in no way" interfere with the committee's ongoing probe into Russia's interference in the 2016 US election. "Ms. Watkins did not disclose the personal nature of her relationship early on in her tenure, and she was managed accordingly thereafter".

Robert Whittaker vs. Yoel Romero II is going ahead after all
However, as the ceremonial weigh-ins begun, we quickly learned that the main event would go on but just as a non-title fight. On Friday, he came in at 185.2 for his title fight with Robert Whittaker, forcing it to be a non-title fight affair.

The New York Times reports the Federal Bureau of Investigation has crossed a line it's generally hesitant to cross.

One of those scoops was said to be Watkins' story on April 3, 2017, for Buzzfeed News that revealed the FBI was investigating former Trump campaign adviser Carter Page because a Russian spy attempted to recruit him in 2013.

A major motivation for the attack on the rights of the Times reporter is, of course, Trump's anger over the fact that Watkins had learned that Russian spies in 2013 had tried to recruit Trump campaign aide Carter Page.

As part of the probe, the DoJ seized years of records related to two email accounts and a phone number belonging to one Ali Watkins, reported NYT. "These rules protect the public's interest in allowing journalists to report on what's happening inside the government without fear of being investigated".

"Freedom of the press is a cornerstone of democracy, and communications between journalists and their sources demand protection", Times spokeswoman Eileen Murphy said. That article was published with Watkins's byline by BuzzFeed News with the headline A Former Trump Adviser Met With A Russian Spy.

President Barack Obama's Department of Justice set the stage for this behavior, so this isn't a case of Trump "normalizing" snooping on the press.

Wolfe's identity had been previously undisclosed, but the Senate had quietly passed a resolution Wednesday evening authorizing lawmakers to provide the Justice Department with documents in connection to the investigation.

Referring to an "explosion" of leaks since President Trump took office, Sessions said the Justice Department has "more than tripled" the number of active leak investigations compared to the number pending at the end of the Obama administration. "But you can not leak", Trump said, speaking to reporters.

Wolfe, a Maryland resident, was expected to make his first court appearance on Friday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.
