Max Verstappen loses cool during press conference ahead of Canadian GP

"I think if I get a few more I'll head-butt someone", he said, only slowly allowing a faint grin.

But Ferrari often start weekends slowly only to leap up the timing sheets on Saturday when it matters, and Vettel was only 0.272secs behind Verstappen's pace-setting lap. Vettel said. "I brushed the wall and lost some time getting ready for the second session".

Mercedes' decision to choose the fewest number of hyper-soft tyres for this weekend out of all the teams may have contributed as neither driver had tried them until Saturday morning, but Hamilton can not blame only that as Bottas ended up on the front row.

The Mercedes driver locked up on his final lap and was unable to move team-mate Valtteri Bottas out of second, while Max Verstappen pipped him to third as he continued a strong response to his woes in Monaco.

Sebastian Vettel stormed to pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix fending off the challenge from Mercedes and Red Bull to clinch Ferrari's first pole in Montreal since 2001. Yesterday we had a couple of small lock-ups but not a lot and as you continue to push the set-up there are areas that can be affected.

Vettel powered his Ferrari around the 4.361-kilometre Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in one minute 10.776 seconds. Obviously, Max showed some pace, so I think there's a bit for us to learn. The vehicle has been working really well and we know in qualifying we are missing top speed.

Muguruza, Halep to face off in French Open semifinals
The Romanian broke at the start of the second set and then held for 6-3 as Kerber dropped her serve again in the ninth game. The signs were ominous when the five-times Grand Slam champion coughed up three nervy double-faults in the opening game.

"We extracted the best we could out of qualifying".

Asked how he tries to help Verstappen when in need, Ricciardo said: "If he was to ask me something I would happily tell him my position or my point of view".

When asked if he felt Red Bull had the pace for pole after seeing teammate Daniel Ricciardo go quickest in Q2, he said: "I knew we had a good vehicle, but I wanted to wait and see how competitive we would be in Q3".

Despite his hard start to the season, Verstappen is often praised for being one of the exciting drivers and prospects in Formula 1, with many believing he's a champion waiting for his chance.

Renault's Nico Hulkenberg has got back in the groove of qualifying in seventh place for the race, he is joined on the fourth row by Force India's Esteban Ocon. "I was a lot happier with the vehicle and I think we can carry that into the race".

Mercedes were first out in Q3 and smashed the records, Bottas topping Hamilton in 1:10.857 before Vettel beat that.
