New Apple features to expand Siri and tackle device addiction

New Apple features to expand Siri and tackle device addiction

Today NPR spoke directly with Apple CEO Tim Cook about the revelations that hardware makers had access to personal data in the Facebook app. NPR's Laura Sydell was there and joins us now.

In an interview with CNN's Laurie Segall on Monday, Cook said, "I think that the privacy thing has gotten totally out of control and I think most people are not aware of who is tracking them, how much they're being tracked and the large amounts of detailed data that are out there about them".

Apple has always been strict with upholding user privacy.

The Photos app will use more artificial intelligence to help users search for photos, as well as share them with friends recognised in images.

"We've all seen these - these like buttons, and share buttons and these comment fields".

That's very strong evidence that it's coming, but it's not the only evidence, as iOS 12 also brings multiple user support to Face ID, which is a feature that would be far more useful on an iPad than an iPhone, since tablets are typically shared more than phones. The company announced an update to its mobile Safari browser that would give users the ability to block Facebook and other ad tech firms tracking their activity around the web.

India's growth likely topped 7pc again in January-March quarter
Possibly, the biggest risk could be rising crude oil prices, which this month hit $80 a barrel, their highest since 2014. "We expect GDP growth of about 7.3 per cent in 2018, down from our previous forecast of 7.5 per cent", the report said.

Apple faced a backlash late past year when it emerged that the company slowed down some older iPhones with flagging batteries. It was a clear reference to Facebook's Cambridge Analytica scandal. With iOS 12, users will be able to FaceTime with up to 32 people, use a new app called Screen Time to monitor how long you're spending on specific apps.

Some of the controls are similar to those unveiled by Google last month, when it revealed plans to have phones go into "shush" mode when placed face down on a table and have the screen show only greyscale colors late at night.

Facebook executives have pushed back against critics like Apple.

Apple Watch's operating system also upgraded to WatchOS 5.0, which included a new feature where users can press a button and send their voice directly via walkie-talkie-style communication with other Apple Watch users.

"The things mentioned in the Times article about relationship status, all these kinds of things, is so foreign to us, and not data that we have ever received at all or requested - zero", Cook told NPR. Although Apple didn't make this announcement on its WWDC 2018, according to the source 9to5mac, iOS 12 soon let you register an "alternative appearance" for Face ID.
