Miss America pageant dropping swimsuit, evening gown competition

Miss America pageant dropping swimsuit, evening gown competition

Gretchen Carlson, the chairwoman of the Miss America board of directors, announced on "Good Morning America" that the event will no longer feature a swimsuit portion.

The competition's contestants - representatives of all 50 USA states - "will be asked to demonstrate their passion, intelligence and overall understanding of the job of Miss America", the show reported.

"It's our history, it's how we started, but it's evolved away from that", Gravely said about the swimsuit part of the competition.

The revamped Miss America will also nix its evening gown segment and instead encourage women to wear whatever they want.

The next edition of the Miss America pageant will scrap swimsuits and will be more inclusive to women of all sizes, the contest announced Tuesday.

According to Carlson, who has been the main advocate of cutting the swimsuit competition, the decision to get rid of that particular portion of the show came after learning young women didn't want to participate because it was based on looks and appearance rather than values.

"We want to celebrate your accomplishments and your talents and then we want to hand you scholarships".

The move comes amidst a re-branding of the pageant called "Miss America 2.0".

Mund, who reigns throughout 2018, will crown the next victor Miss America 2019.

Despite the best efforts of parishioners and bystanders, the pastor was bitten on his legs, back and arms and could not be saved. Fishermen attempted to rescue Docho, but they only managed to prevent the crocodile from taking his body with fishing nets.

So, what will replace the swimsuit competition?

Leanza Cornett won Miss America in 1993.

Miss America's former executive director Sam Haskell, president Josh Randle, and other board members resigned over a scandal previous year over vulgar emails disparaging contestants.

The competition began almost 100 years ago in Atlantic City, New Jersey as a bathing beauty contest created to keep tourists coming to the seaside resort in the weeks after Labor Day.

"Talent, which has always been a distinguishing element of Miss America, will remain a highlight of the competition", the organization said in a statement.

While she agreed it was "absolutely" a woman's choice, Sylvia claimed that dropping the bikini competition was "a step in the right direction". "I so trust our Miss America leadership, and I know that there is a force of women working for the good of the organization at the end of the day". "So I think there's a little sadness on my part, but I'm willing to accept the fact that in order to stay relevant, we have to change".

The Miss America beauty pageant is making major changes-none of them cosmetic.

She added that organizers aren't concerned about the changes having an affect on TV ratings for the upcoming contest, which airs on September 9.

"There are tons of women across this country who are not "swimsuit-ready" who are doing some really bad-ass stuff in their communities", she said.
