Harker Heights holds its 13th annual Memorial Parade and Ceremony

The Rantoul Township High School band will be part of the service. In 1966, President Lyndon Johnson signed a presidential proclamation naming Waterloo, New York, as the birthplace of Memorial Day and was declared the official name by Federal law in 1967.

Many of us will spend Memorial Day with family and friends, while others will honor our fallen heroes buried at the Veteran's Cemetery in Evansville.

The following is a list of events across the region.

Mason Memorial Day Parade, begins at Bond Park at 9 a.m.

"It promises to be one of the largest parades in the area", Mayor Melvin Coakley said.

The Yorkville American Legion will hold its annual Memorial Day service from 11:30 a.m.to 12:30 p.m. Monday in Town Square, 301 N. Bridge St.in Yorkville. The scouts have collected more than 600 flags and the public is invited to bring their own flags and participate in the ceremony. The church sits along the parade route.

- The nonprofit group Philippine Plaza will host a Memorial Day event on Sunday at Philippine Plaza, at the corner of Manila Avenue and Second Street, dedicated to Philippine-American veterans of all wars. Services will be broadcast live on WBLF AM Radio.

The final service will be at 10:00 a.m.at the Long Grove Cemetery in Maynard, with Elaine VandeVorde giving the Memorial Day address. Lineup begins at 9 a.m. and the parade will step off at 9:15 a.m. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held in the City Hall auditorium. There will be a march throughout the Lafayette area and return to the church at 10 a.m. for a concelebrated Mass with the Revs.

The Aurora Legion and Auxiliary will also conduct services at the Madison Cemetery, rural Lamont, at 9:30 a.m.

While local ceremonies will be held at Homelake and Alamosa, veterans' graves are in nearly every cemetery in the San Luis Valley.

Following the salutes in Marshall, a parade will wind from St. Mary's Catholic Church parking lot on South Beebe Street to the Marshall Elementary School where Gen. Kerry Denson will be the guest speaker. Individuals are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

This annual event honors all veterans for their dedication, their service and their sacrifices. In case of rain the parade will be cancelled and the ceremony will be held at the school in Walsh Common.

This year there will not be a procession from Wedgewood Park to the Grandville Cemetery. The buffet line will open Friday at 4 p.m. and go to 8 p.m. or until the food is gone.

Volunteers planned to start placing the flags this morning at 8:30, but eager volunteers were out here well before.

The public is welcome to attend.

"Some people have never seen the retirement of a flag", he said.

Dowdy also mentioned that many cemeteries will host memorial services.

Darin Troglia will provide the music, and the Marine Corps League Detachment 824 will provide the honor guard and Taps. The guest speaker will be past state Commander of the Department of Pennsylvania Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S., Thomas Brown. A reception follows at the fire hall. The annual parade, sponsored by American Legion Cole Briggs Post 48. The invocation will be given by Pastor Kevin Brophy. Philipsburg-Osceola High School student Gillian Letson will sing the national anthem.

Color guards from both communities will hold gun salutes at local cemeteries, four in Waterloo and two in Marshall.

May 28: Charlestown Cross' Mills Memorial Day Parade begins at 1 pm, starting at Ridgewood Road and Old Post Road, and traveling to King Tom Drive, followed by a ceremony at Ninigret Park along with refreshments and a concert.

The schedule includes: Goss, 2 p.m.; Lithuanian, 2:15 p.m.; Centre, 2:30 p.m.; Baughman (Drane), 2:45 p.m.; Baughman (Sanborn), 3 p.m., and Sanborn, 3:15 p.m. Taps will be played at each cemetery. The 1.5 mile parade route begins at E. 64th Ave. and Newport St. and ends at 6060 E. Parkway Dr.
