PM Modi, Putin to hold informal summit in Russia's Sochi

An External Affairs Ministry release on Monday said Modi's visit to Russian Federation will be an important occasion for him and Putin to exchange views on worldwide matters in a broad and long-term perspective in order to further strengthen the special and privileged strategic partnership. "Both leaders will also discuss their respective national developmental priorities and bilateral matters", said a statement from the MEA. The summit, according to sources, was a last minute decision and only came together after an unnanounced visit to Moscow by NSA Ajit Doval and foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale.

Modi and Putin will also meet in China on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Summit in June, followed by a meeting on sidelines of the BRICS Summit in South Africa in July. Modi and Putin last met in Russian Federation previous year. Modi had visited St. Petersburg for the 18th edition of annual bilateral summit in 2017. Earlier in the last month, Prime Minister Modi attended a two-day informal summit along with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Wuhan city. Observers have termed the move significant to boost investments in India.

Informal summits are clearly the flavour of the season. On the other hand, Russian Federation is finding itself to be much closer to China, which is a big negative for India. Ever since the Trump administration chose to withdraw from the nuclear deal, alleging that Tehran is not fulfilling its commitments, the worldwide community has been working overtime to salvage the deal.

Indian officials have already conveyed to United States that defence purchases from Russian Federation were essential to maintain military preparedness and were not targeting Washington.

The recent developments have also meant that numerous powers have also been holding talks with Putin.
