Countries that continue to deal with Iran could face U.S. sanctions: Bolton

Before leaving Tehran, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini in a telephone conversation discussed the fate of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) after the USA pullout, according to Fars.

Mr Zarif said on his first stop, China, that he hoped to secure a "clear future design" for the agreement.

At a dinner among the four countries' foreign ministers and the EU's top diplomat, the European powers will say that they stick by the terms of the 2015 pact giving Iran sanctions relief in return for an end to its nuclear ambitions.

"Iran's interests in important areas and issues relevant to the JCPOA, like oil, gas, and petrochemicals sales, as well as banking relations should be clearly and explicitly defined and guaranteed", Rouhani said.

Germany acknowledged it could be hard to protect companies doing business with Iran as a senior USA official renewed a threat of sanctions against European firms following Washington's decision to pull out of a nuclear deal with Tehran. After years of crippling economic sanctions, the deal opened Iran to business with the United States and Europe, and companies around the world began doing business in Iran.

"Iran's Military Budget is up more than 40 percent since the Obama negotiated Nuclear Deal was reached. just another indicator that it was all a big lie", he wrote.

The EU insists the deal is working, pointing to repeated United Nations inspections verifying the Islamic republic's compliance with its side of the bargain, and Mogherini's spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic told AFP ahead Zarif's arrival that "we must do our utmost to preserve it".

He will later head to Moscow and Brussels.

"The talks with the Europeans, Iran and the other signatories to the agreement are therefore also about how it can be possible to continue trade with Iran", Maas said.

During his CNN interview, Bolton also said that "it's possible" sanctions could be placed on European companies that continue to do business with Iran after the US pullout from the 2015 nuclear deal.

The deal came together after years of painstaking work and global collaboration - first in developing a united front of crippling sanctions against the Iranian regime to bring the nation to the bargaining table, then years of multilateral negotiations with Iran, the European Union, China and Russian Federation.

After the President Donald Trump announced his withdrawal from the Iran deal, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said his decision was "disappointing".

Germany - along with France and Britain - has said it remains committed to the nuclear deal.

Under the deal, Iran was also left free to develop long-range missiles that can threaten other countries in the Middle East, including several Arab countries.
