Spanish F1 Grand Prix 2018 Results: Lewis Hamilton Dominant in Victory

ESPN rounds up the main talking points from the Spanish Grand Prix, a race where Lewis Hamilton dominated from the opening lap to claim a second victory in 2018.

Vettel looked set to finish behind Hamilton to limit the title damage, but Ferrari's gamble to pit him for a second time backfired with Valtteri Bottas following Hamilton home to secure Mercedes' first one-two finish of the season.

Hamilton stayed out until lap 25 and slotted back in behind the yet-to-stop Verstappen, who had profited from the exit of Kimi Raikkonen mere minutes before.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen came third, followed by Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel of Germany in fourth.

Today the auto and myself, I felt that synergy which I hadn't been feeling for the whole year.

But Mercedes, who pitted some 10 laps earlier than the two Red Bulls, managed their tyres to the finish, while Vettel's hopes were futher dashed by his own slow second stop under the virtual safety vehicle.

It was a record-extending 74th pole for Hamilton, and the first since the season-opener in Australia. "A 1-2 for the team", Hamilton said.

It was a fairly straightforward win for Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton. "I know that sounds weird but today is definitely I think the closest I've been".

There was no way that Verstappen could have challenged Hamilton for the top position on the podium.

"I needed this pole".

Daniel Ricciardo had a lonely run to fifth position, having gone wide through the Turn 9 gravel early on, before suffering a spin later on, finishing over 20 seconds down on nearest opponent Vettel. Sixth was Haas driver Kevin Magnussen, who helped convert the team's strong pace into a healthy haul of points.

Both Spanish drivers made it to the final qualifying session, with two-time champion Fernando Alonso eighth with McLaren and Carlos Sainz ninth with Renault.

"Race by race we are understanding the tyres more", he said.

The race started in chaotic fashion as Romain Grosjean lost control of his Haas-Ferrari and while spinning and smoking his tyres, spun into the path of Renault F1's Nico Hulkenberg and Toro Rosso-Honda's Pierre Gasly. Vettel, or Raikkonen, could just do what Alonso did in 2013 and get that Ferrari over the line first, but due to driver error and (what looks like) poor strategic calls, the race might just be an uphill battle.

In total, six cars failed to finish.

But it was the virtual safety auto that arguably had the biggest say in Sunday's race.

Ferrari surrendered the lead in the constructors' championship to Mercedes and now trail them by 27 points after five races.

"If you look from outside it's easier, but inside the auto, we were going through the tyres too quick".

When Vettel made his second stop during a late virtual safety vehicle period, after Esteban Ocon parked up his Force India by the side of the track, it backfired and he lost a place instead of gaining anything. McLaren's Stoffel Vandoorne also retired because of a auto failure, as did Esteban Ocon with Force India.
