Homeland Security Denies Report That Secretary Drafted Resignation Letter

President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen got into a lengthy, heated argument during a Cabinet meeting focused on immigration Wednesday, a source with knowledge of the blowup told CNN.

The exchange was so hostile, according to The New York Times, that Nielsen later informed colleagues that she planned to leave the administration and drafted a resignation letter, though she did not submit it.

Chief of Staff John Kelly, Nielsen's top ally who recommended her to Trump for the Homeland Security job, also was present.

The New York Times reported Thursday that the president has growing increasingly angry with Nielsen over what he feels is the country's inability to adequately secure its border.

Following the release of the report, Nielsen said in a statement that Trump "is rightly frustrated" on border security issues.

Trump's outburst was not only aimed at Nielsen, according to the Times, but the entire cabinet for not making enough progress in stopping illegal immigration and ensuring border security.

But DHS spokesman Tyler Q. Houlton called the claims "false".

The attack came shortly ahead of the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan, which begins around May 16. The suspects then attacked three people before setting some of the mosque's rooms alight.

The data reveals the extent to which the nation's asylum laws have been used by foreign nationals to enter the USA, just as DHS Secretary Nielsen begged asylum-seekers to use the ports of entry to come to the country, as Breitbart News reported.

Nielsen in a statement on Thursday, said she shared Trump's frustration that "active Loop Holes and the lack of Allied actions have prevented this government out of fully procuring the border and shielding the American folks".

Trump reportedly complained to his cabinet that they need to do more to address the border.

One persistent issue has been Trump's belief that Nielsen and other officials in the department were resisting his direction that parents should be separated from their children when families cross illegally into the United States, several officials said. "She feels like she's doing the best she can and doing a good job on immigration, but she also has to follow the law", this person said.

What Trump didn't note when conveying those orders, however, is that the USA has a domestic and global legal obligation to process any immigrant who comes to its borders seeking asylum.

Trump's hard line against illegal immigration is a part of his presidency as he pursues an "America First" agenda that comprises an proposed wall along the U.S.

A caravan of Central American migrants traveling through Mexico seized the president's attention this spring, and in the weeks that followed he frequently asked Homeland Security for updates, administration officials said.
