Ronaldo leaves El Clasico after suffering apparent ankle injury

Cristiano Ronaldo leveled for his side Real Madrid in the 14 minute after Luis Suarez had put Barcelona forward in the fiercest match of La Liga-El Classico, which was played at Camp Nou on Sunday.

Given the obvious animosity between the two clubs and the fact that much of the post-match build-up was dominated by Real's refusal to offer a guard of honour to their great rivals, one of the most satisfying tributes to Iniesta came from opposition manager Zinedine Zidane. "He is a bit anxious, right now the ankle is a bit swollen, but he said it is not so bad".

"We watched an incredible game of football and I can't say if the draw is fair or not", said Zidane, who would not be drawn on the referee's performance. "The Champions League final?"

Asensio fed the Wales global on the edge of the box and he bent a first-time strike out of Ter Stegen's reach to level for the UEFA Champions League finalist.

VAR is due to be introduced to La Liga next season, and Valverde is anticipating the technology to have a significant impact, especially on games like Sunday's Clasico.

"Clasicos should be played like this, it was a lovely game", Suarez told reporters. Iniesta went off to a standing ovation in the second half.

Then came massive waves of water, which crashed through farmland, swept away hundreds of houses and killed at least 32 people. The floods hit as the East African nation was recovering from a severe drought that affected half of the country.

With Barcelona already Spanish league champion and Madrid focused on its Champions League final later this month, it was supposed to be the most low-key "clasico" in years.

The lead, however, lasted four minutes.

Ronaldo started the move by teeing up Toni Kroos on the overlap, the Germany midfielder's cross nodded into the middle by Benzema and the Portugal superstar tapped in on the line despite the close attention of Gerard Pique. The Frenchman was cool enough to head back into the six-yard box, where Ronaldo bundled home. His first shot was saved by Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, the second fired wide of the far post. Suarez felt he had been elbowed by Sergio Ramos, prompting the first round of scuffles, before Messi was booked for flying into the defender on the touchline.

He never appeared to look right following the goal and was subsequently taken off as a precaution at the break, replaced by Marco Asensio. He skipped away first from Ramos, and then Casemiro, before firing into the bottom corner.

Navas did well to stop Messi wrapping up the points after the Barca star raced clear and that save proved key as Bale struck in the 72nd minute.

He then had a chance to sentence the outcome with a shot which Keylor Navas well saved, but ending his wait of almost six years for a Camp Nou Clasico goal in La Liga was enough to make a suitably big impression. It was the final controversy of a surprisingly heated derby.
