Pashinian: 'No vendetta' if he becomes Armenian premier

The Armenian parliament voted to elect opposition leader Nikol Pashinian prime minister on Tuesday almost one month after he launched sustained anti-government protests that led to resignation of Armenia's longtime leader, Serzh Sarkisian. "You can absolutely compare him with historical figures like Gandhi and Nelson Mandela", said Eduard Aghajanyan, a city council member from Mr Pashinyan's Civil Contract party, and one of Mr Pashinyan's young, western-educated advisers.

Thousands of supporters gathered to celebrate in the capital of Yerevan as Pashinyan won the vote 59 to 42, according to the BBC.

After failing to get enough votes in parliament's May 1 vote, Pashinian was nominated again on May 3 by his Yelk faction and allied opposition parties, and remains the only official candidate for prime minister.

In a referendum in 2015, Armenia adopted constitutional changes to move the powers from the president to the prime minister. He said his first priority was to organize the first fair parliamentary elections in many years.

The protests led Sargsyan to resign the post after just a few days. While the Republicans could block those, in theory, doing so would trigger snap elections in which they would certainly lose seats.

The majority of deputies of the National Assembly supported Pashinyan.

The France striker underlined his potent presence with the decisive goal to keep Chelsea in the Champions League race. Chelsea and Tottenham have two games to play, while Brighton are Liverpool's only remaining opponents.

At a rally on April 17, opposition MP Nikol Pashinyan announced beginning of the Velvet Revolution in the country.

Pashinyan's victory amounts to a peaceful revolution in Armenia, a small nation of around 3 million people squeezed between Iran, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Georgia. "In Armenia, the page of political and economic persecution has been closed".

Russian President Vladimir Putin congratulated Pashinian, who has promised he'll continue close relations with Moscow.

"This is a real test case for Russia's politics in the former Soviet Republics", said Chatham House's Broers.

Pending fresh elections "Pashinyan must manoeuvre between the will of the people and the parliamentary ruling party that he does not belong to and which can not begin supporting him", he said. "And for me, my goal isn't to become prime minister".

Yet faced with weeks of mass protests, Sargsyan left the premiership on April 23, six days after his election.
