Free smears for Kildare woman on Cervicalcheck programme

Simon Harris, the health minister, said that the families of all those who died would be informed about the audit by today.

Chair of the HSE Serious Incident Management Team Patrick Lynch said the women had a right to know about their cases. The figures came to light after terminally-ill mother Vicky Phelan settled her case.

Mr Harris said this evening: "Whilst I had previously been advised, and it had been commonly understood that CervicalCheck clinical audit covered all cases notified to the National Cancer Registry, I have been informed this afternoon that this is not the case".

The HSE has invited all women on the programme, whose GP feels she should have a further test in the wake of the recent CervicalCheck controversy, after a number of women were not told in time that they had abnormal cells.

Ms Phelan has said she does not believe Mr O'Brien learned about her case last week.

"Two hundred and eight women went for a vital screening for a life-threatening illness and they were wrongly given the all clear".

A TOTAL of 17 women have died due to a cervical screening controversy in the Republic.

Cowboys' Jason Witten retiring after 15 seasons to join MNF
He and Tony Gonzalez , a first ballot Hall of Famer, are the only tight ends with at least 1,000 catches and 10,000 yards. The decision to retire is a reversal for Witten, who previously said he would return to the Cowboys for the 2018 season.

The State's leading screening body for cervical cancer is now facing an independent inquiry by HIQA over its handling of the issue, with HSE director Tony O'Brien claiming he only became aware of the scandal when news broke in the media.

He also said he is bringing patient safety legislation to Cabinet next week.

'I recently approved a proposal from the National Screening Service to Move to HPV testing as the primary test for cervical cancer from October 2018.

Mr Harris also said he is appointing an global clinical panel.

Mr Harris defended his own handling of the controversy, saying that a briefing note supplied to him by officials on April 16 suggested women were being informed of any errors in their treatment. "But her courage and tenacity has done a great service to the women of Ireland and her actions will ultimately lead to improvements for all", he said.

It has also been revealed that a helpline for women concerned about this matter has now received 6,000 calls.

Vicky Phelan's lawyer, Cian O'Carroll, called the conduct throughout the process appalling and said, "it is particularly disgusting when you learn of the number of people that have died".
