Fitbit to use Google Cloud to share medical data with doctors

Fitbit has recently announced its collaboration with Google to link the data gathered by the company's wearable to the medical records.

In 2016, Fitbit ended a similar partnership with Microsoft, which allowed users to sync personal medical data with the software company's HealthVault technology.

"We have been using the Google Cloud Genomics API for a long time and are very excited to see Google Cloud expanding its offerings to include the new Cloud Healthcare API", said Somalee Datta, Ph.D., Standford School of Medicine Director of Research IT. Google Cloud provides Fitbit with next-generation cloud services and engineering support, allowing Fitbit to scale faster.

What Is Google Cloud Healthcare API?

The wearable fitness tracker manufacturer hopes to connect its devices to the electronic medical records (EMR) systems used by doctors and hospitals, with the aim of enabling healthcare practitioners to get health data straight from the patients' device.

Fitbit will use Google Cloud's services, including the Google Cloud Healthcare API, that looks to improve clinical services for patients, and improve diagnostics through machine learning. This would make it easier for physicians to learn more about a patient and provide more personalized treatment by using the data collected by the patient's Fitbit device.

Another wrinkle to this collaboration is that Google and Fitbit will collaborate on both consumer and enterprise products.

"What will Fitbit and Google do with this data?"

The partnership moved Fitbit a step closer toward healthcare legitimacy. This will save Fitbit from having to reinvent the wheels all over again as they are getting to make good use of existing facility without having to set up one of their own.

Within Google's cloud, caregivers could access data from patients who might suffer from chronic conditions. Google Cloud is also committed to meeting the requirements for security and privacy in the healthcare industry, with the majority of Google Cloud products supporting HIPAA compliance, including Cloud IoT Core. Google's artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities as well as new predictive analytic algorithms will advance Fitbit's endeavours to bring more impactful insights and data to consumers to enable them to attain positive health outcomes.
