Romania slams plan to move Israel embassy

Iohannis, who is from the centre-right and has expressed numerous disagreements with the government, claimed he had the authority to "take decisions relating to Romania's foreign policy" and underlined that Bucharest's position on the Israeli-Palestinian question "had not changed".

President Klaus Iohannis on Friday denied in a statement the veracity of assertions made the previous day by Liviu Dragnea, president of the Chamber of Deputies.

Social Democratic Party leader Liviu Dragnea revealed on a talk show on Thursday that the government had begun the formalities to move the embassy to Jerusalem in line with USA earlier decision to do so.

Iohannis said the decision was "not based on firm, wide-ranging evaluations". "Moving the Embassy may and I believe would bring great benefits in the short, medium and long run, and we must use this huge opportunit", he said.

A USA official said the embassy would be located at a provisional site in Jerusalem that now houses a US consular section.

He called for a resolution of their Israeli-Palestinian conflict via a "two-state resolution".
